Singapore Flora and Fauna
Here is a small selection of stamps from Singapore featuring the country’s flora and fauna. Our featured stamp sheet is one of a limited edition of 9,000 pieces produced for the Singapore World Stamp Exhibition in 1995. Quite a rare item and as I write still available at PostBeeld.
Above, with design and artwork by Chinese-born/Singaporean graphic artist Eng Siak Loy a set of “Heritage Trees” stamps. The trees featured – Flame of The Forest (22 cents), Rain Tree (60 cents), Kapok ($1) and Tembusu ($1).
The beautiful watercolour drawings seen on the four stamp sheets above and below were originally commissioned by an iconic 18th Century figure – the first British Resident and Commandant of Singapore from 1819 to 1823 – the Scotsman Major-General William Farquhar (1774-1839). These watercolour paintings, by unidentified Chinese artists, illustrate the flora and fauna of Malacca and Singapore. The Farquhar Collection, consisting of more than 400 pieces of art are held in the National Museum of Singapore.
This stamp sheet has four freshwater tropical fish, species Symphysodon – top, left to right, Blue Turquoise and Brown Discus. Bottom, l-r, Red Allenquer and Red Turquoise.
Issued for the 1995 Singapore World Stamp Exhibition was this stamp sheet depicting native animals and two stamps with the orchids Vanda Marlie Dolera and Vanda Limbata.
